If involved in an accident, you need to file a claim with your insurance company as soon as possible. Most of the time the insurance company will review the claim, and provide coverage after the payment of your deductible if necessary. In some cases, the circumstances of your accident may cause you to be denied coverage when you submit a claim. When the claim is reviewed by the insurance company, that is when they will decide if it will be covered or not. If your claim is denied, it would probably be because the cause of your accident is not insured against in your type of policy.
To be denied coverage on a claim, it might not be because of what happened during the accident, it may be what caused it. For example, if you were doing something while driving that put you in a dangerous situation and your policy states that you will not be covered because of it, then you will be denied coverage because it was clearly stated in your policy. Because of the complexity of every different situation, the insurance company will analyze all information carefully before making any final decisions.
A common misconception is that you are covered on the road no matter what happens. That however could not be further from the truth, because there are always things that insurance companies will not cover. These are usually things that are your fault for doing them, and the insurance company will not support your acts, therefore will deny you coverage in that situation. For example, say your policy specifically states that any under the influence accidents will not be covered. If you filed a claim for that reason, you would probably be denied all coverage on that claim. Aside from having your claim denied, the cause of having to file the claim in the first place may make it harder for you to obtain affordable auto insurance in the future.
If your claim was denied by the insurance company, you are left without any coverage to pay for damages. You are pretty much responsible to pay for all damages out of your own pocket. There is however another option, you could take the claim to court if you really thought that you did nothing wrong, but attorney fees will also come out of your pocket. So basically if you were denied coverage on a claim, it will most likely be up to you to pay for damage costs.
