Chances are that we will not be involved in an auto accident most of the time we get behind the wheel, but we must not forget that there is always the possibility that a accident can happen at any given time. Even though we may practice safe driving and use our defensive driving skills, sometimes an accident is just unavoidable. If you are involved in an auto accident there are certain things that you need to do and other things that you shouldn’t do.
NEVER ADMIT FAULT:
You must stay calm and relax after an accident occurs, you will have a thousand feelings going through you after an accident and may not be thinking straight. With your mind still in shock after an accident, you may feel that the accident was your fault when in reality it really wasn’t. Don’t ever admit fault to the accident, even if you think it could possibly be your fault. The only ones you should ever admit fault to should be your insurance company or your lawyer. Do not say things that can be used against you later such as telling the other driver that you are sorry, these kind of comments will make it seem like it was your fault and that you are admitting guilt. Later, when you evaluate the facts of the accident with your insurance company or lawyer, you may conclude that the accident was not your fault at all. Just remember, never admit guilt after a car accident!
OTHER THINGS TO REMEMBER:
If anyone in your car or the other car needs medical attention don’t hesitate to call 911.
Contact the police as soon as you can and let them know the location of the accident.
Call your insurance company and give them detailed information of everything that happened.
Exchange information with the other driver. You will want to get their basic information such as their name, address, phone number, birth date, drivers license number, all of their insurance information and their policy number. Also note their car model, license plate number and any other information you can get, the more information you can get the better. Also, if there were any witnesses be sure to get their information.
Make sure that you fill out a police report. Write a detailed, accurate, and truthful report.
