Everyone knows that health insurance offered from an employer is a very nice benefit to your job, but what can make it even better is how it is taxed. Even though you are sometimes offered benefits from your employer such as health insurance, a piece of the premium can be taken out from your paycheck. So even though you are getting health insurance through your employers program, it is not always fully paid for, and your will have to sometimes pay a portion of it. When that does happen, the money is almost always taken out from your paycheck before taxes when it is going towards a sponsored health insurance program.
You may be wondering if the money for your health insurance premium is taken out before taxes, and are medical expenses with that health insurance tax deductible? Well really any money that you spend yourself for medical costs such as co-pays to doctors, hospital visits, prescriptions, and anything else that is relevant to health care could be used as a tax deductible item. Anything that you paid for with health care is deductible if you have a receipt. All you have to do is file it on your W2 form when you are filing your yearly taxes.
On the other hand, if you are paying for your health insurance without a employer run program, then you will have to put down your own money to pay the premiums. Since it is not with your employer, it cannot be taken from your employers paycheck, so technically it will have to be paid for after taxes have been taken from your paycheck. Also, with an individual health insurance policy, you will have to pay the full amount of the premium. Unlike with an employer health insurance policy, there is a chance you will have to pay for a portion of it with your paycheck.
You have to remember with an individual health insurance policy, that it is considered a heath care expense, and it may be tax deductible. When you have an employer health insurance plan where a portion of the premium is taken out from your paycheck before taxes, that may not be tax deductible when you file your taxes for the year. The reason being is because the health insurance premium is being paid for before taxes are taken from the paycheck. So there would be no way to get a tax deduction on something that was paid for with untaxed income.
