Pregnancy can complicate things in a relationship, along with all the medical expenses your health insurance would typically cover. Sometimes the father of the unborn child is not married to the mother, or even in a relationship with her anymore. For an insurance company to come after the father of an unborn child would be very unlikely. The only reason the insurance company would want to come after the father is to pay for the medical expenses from the mother to ensure a healthy pregnancy. They could say that he caused the mothers medical costs, and he should be responsible to pay for them. However, as long as the mother had health insurance, the insurance company would almost never come after the father of an unborn baby.
The health insurance companies take pregnancy risks into consideration when pricing out the policy. That can affect the overall premium, so if someone were to become pregnant, the insurance company would have already planned for that possibility. It is also possible for the premium to be raised for women at a higher risk of pregnancy, or a history of pregnancies. Every insurance company handles pregnancies with their customers differently, so check with your agent to see if there would be any problems with coverage prior to planning a new born.
Depending on your type of insurance, weather it is with an employer or just an individual policy, becoming pregnant should have no effect on coverage. However, in some cases if you are on Medicaid or any other form of welfare insurance, you will be covered, but they could try and get some of that money back. They could try and go after the father of the unborn child to help cover the mothers medical costs before the child’s birth. Since the mother doesn’t really have an insurance plan on her own, the sponsored program will try to get money back any way they can.
As the father of the child, if you are no longer in a relationship with the mother, that could leave you paying for the child’s well being before he or she is born. It is comparable to a child support payment made to pay for expenses in the child’s behalf. Pregnancy can complicate many of things, and as the father of an unborn child not being in a relationship with the mother could leave you paying for more expenses. In a standard health insurance policy, it is very unlikely for an insurance company to come after the father for money, but with a government run program nothing is certain. Every situation and every insurance company handles this differently, so there is no sure answer on whether the father of an unborn child will be held responsible for medical costs.
