When Coming to the United States on a green card for whatever reason, you do not have to go without health insurance. There are many different health insurance plans available for people on green cards. The different plans are based on the type of coverage you want, but more importantly the length of coverage you need. The health plans are available for any length of time usually under five years. There are three main types of green card health coverage plans:
* Inbound Immigrant Insurance – 5 year max, cannot be extended beyond that time frame.
* Visit-USA Insurance Plan – 12 month max, cannot be renewed, but you can be eligible for a whole new policy.
* Diplomat America LT Plan – 3 year max.
The more time you spend on a green card in the United States, the more privileges and opportunities you will have for health care. For example, having spend at least six months residing in the united states with a green card will make you eligible for domestic health insurance if you are less that 65 years of age. If you are over 65 years of age, then you may apply for a special health coverage’s such as the Bridge Plan.
Some government health coverage may be available for green card citizens, but they must follow a specific set of rules. For example, Medicare, the government sponsored health benefits program, is available to people once they have been in the United States for 5 years or more. They also must have their green card status throughout the 5 years, and must have been living in the US for that period of time.
Planning is key to coming to the United States on a green card, so make sure that you have everything you need including plans for health insurance. Don’t be someone who makes the mistake in thinking that you can’t get health insurance if you are not a full citizen. It is important for everyone to have health coverage, that’s why health insurance is available for people coming to the United States from another country.
