How variables are used to calculate home insurance premiums

Posted on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 under: Home
Tags: high homeowners premium, increasing home insurance policy, paying more for homeowners insurance

There are many variables that can affect the cost of your home insurance, and your premium is given with many things in mind. Take for example the way your house was constructed, most houses are either constructed with framed wood or brick. Typically a house constructed with framed wood would cost more to insure than a house constructed with brick. The reason being, is that a house made of framed wood is at a higher risk of being a complete loss than a brick house in the event of a fire. Don’t think that just because your house is made of wood that you can’t get adequate coverage, there are many other aspects that can affect your insurance premium.

When the insurance companies give you a new policy, they will also take into consideration the age of your home. A lot of times newer homes will qualify for more discounts, because they were built safer with modern technology. From all the wiring to the framework of the house, newer homes are built more precisely and safely which will help lower home insurance costs. It is a fact that older homes are sometimes more of a risk to the insurance company, so the insurer may only offer some type of limited coverage, or no coverage at all.

Home security is something that can also affect the premium on your home insurance policy. For example, if you have home studio equipment that is insured by your homeowners insurance policy, chances are your premium will be higher than someone that does not insure that costly equipment. Home security systems can lower the overall cost of your insurance, because it shows the insurance company that you are trying to be as safe as possible with your valuables. So if you are insuring expensive equipment, a security system can help lower the elevated cost to your premium. The more steps you take to securing your home, the more discounts you will be able to get on your policy. You can contact your insurance company anytime and see if any security changes would affect your premium.Home security not only helps you out with the cost of your homeowners insurance, it lets you and your family know their valuables are safer.

On top of all the other things that insurance companies look at when pricing out a home insurance policy, they will be sure to look at the homes location. They want to know if you live close to fire hydrants, or if you live on a rundown dirt road that’s hard to get to. They also look at things like how much local fire protection you have available in your area. If you are in an area with limited fire protection, you could be paying more in the long run for homeowners insurance.
