With a standard homeowners insurance policy, there are limits to what type of disasters are covered. For example, in most cases flood insurance must be purchased as an add on to your current policy. So if you have a flood and are not covered for flooding, you will not receive full coverage for repair costs. You pay for the coverage you want, and if you want coverage for all types of disasters, your premium will cost more because now the insurance company has a higher risk with you.
You may be thinking that a disaster is a disaster, so why should I have to pay more just because something else caused it? Well the simple fact is that an insurance company is a business, and they do need to make profit. It would not be cost effective for them to offer coverage in any possible situation, because they would lose money. Plus if they were to do that, they would have to raise everyone’s premiums just to make a profit. So why not just put some limits on the types of coverage, then lower the premium costs for everyone. You are still able to get full coverage if you want it, but you may have to spend a little more.
You can’t blame the insurance company for not offering you full coverage at a low rate, they are just trying to run a business. Everything is based on statistics, if there is a very low possibility for a tornado in your area, then why have insurance for it? You choose what coverage you want, and your premium will reflect that. Types of coverage also have a lot to do with location. Not only your location in the country, but the location in your city or town. The insurance company is looking for where disasters occur most often, and in those areas the cost for coverage against those likely disasters will be higher.
It is important for you to go over your policy and make sure you have coverage for likely disasters in your area, because the last thing you want is to find out you didn’t have coverage for a disaster that destroyed your home. It’s the same thing for disasters that don’t occur that often in your area, so why have coverage for something that will probably never happen? If you’re really looking to save money, get rid of coverage that protects you against things that won’t happen in your area. Sift through your policy and make it fit you, so that you know coverage will be available if disaster strikes.
