Generally the answer would be no. One of the things that homeowners insurance will not cover without special written up clauses, is damage to someone else’s car. For that matter, it might not cover your own car. Coverage for either of these situations will probably be through your auto insurance.
It may seem unfair, when your friend has just stopped by to visit very quickly, and your loose shutter falls from the second story window right on your best friend’s car. Logically it would seem that your insurance would pay, but the truth is, that without a special rider attached to your insurance, it will only be covered under your auto insurance or theirs.
One ray of hope is that most insurance will cover something like, slip and falls on your property. Some insurance companies will pay something, if you want to claim it under “voluntary property damage”. Still it may only be as little as five hundred dollars, or as much as a thousand. The other point to remember is that most homeowners Insurance will only cover acts of negligence. So what you are able to receive in compensation may be little or even nothing. That probably won’t go far when fixing your dents and paint jobs, so your friend would have to seek additional coverage from his or her auto insurance plan.
The good news here, is that every policy is different. Look through your policy and read it carefully, try to find clauses or language that offers some hope, and then call and speak with your homeowners insurance policy representative. Find out whether or not your friends car might be covered in its unique situation. Each policy is different, and you might be happily surprised to find that coverage is available, but you must call and speak with your agent to know for sure.
One thing to do right away is before this actually happens to you, speak with your representative and find out what coverage is in your policy.
