How to get information about a life insurance policy when you are the beneficiary

When you have a life insurance policy, one of the most important things is to make sure that all of the named beneficiaries know that they are beneficiaries. It happens too often, someone has a life insurance policy and upon death, the beneficiary does not know the policy was ever taken out. There is over one billion dollars of unclaimed life insurance benefits, because the beneficiaries never knew that they were named as a beneficiary in a life insurance policy. So when taking out a life insurance policy, make sure that everyone involved is notified of their part in the policy.

It can be very difficult to find out if someone had a life insurance policy after they have passed away, because of all the confidentiality laws in place. The best thing to do is ask your loved ones if you were ever named as a beneficiary in a life insurance policy. In some cases though, it is too late to ask the person, and now it can be that much tougher to find out information. At that point, you would have to look through the persons records to try and find out if there ever was an active life insurance policy. If you are stuck in a similar situation, you may try looking at credit cards and bank statements to see if any payments were made to an insurance company.

Finding out if there was a life insurance policy or not can be difficult, so if you find payment records then you are sure to be on the right track. However time is a factor, because after a certain period of time, usually set by each specific state, the unclaimed death benefits will go to the state government. So don’t fall into one of the statistics that never know about potential life insurance benefits and ask your close loved ones if you were ever named as a beneficiary in any way, before it’s too late.

Trying to find out about a life insurance policy after the person has already passed, can lead to a lot more money spent. You may have to hire an attorney, or even a private investigator to find out any useful information. Do yourself a huge favor and ask questions to your loved ones if you suspect that you have been named a beneficiary, and if you take out a life insurance policy be sure to talk with your beneficiaries, so your life insurance benefits don’t go unclaimed. No one likes to think about or even talk about the loss of a loved one, but it can be so beneficial in the future.
