Lying to life insurance companies about smoking

We all know that smoking can affect your life insurance in many different ways. It could raise your premium rates, and even make it harder for some life insurance companies to insure you. Some people get the wrong idea and want to try and trick their life insurance company in attempts to get a lower premium. It is somewhat known that it can take around 7 to 10 days for the nicotine in your body to dissipate enough so it cannot be detected by medical tests. So for a smoker to wait a week or more without smoking to try and trick their insurance company can be a difficult task in itself.

Even if you somehow find a way to “cheat the system”, you are still taking a big risk in doing so. If you are caught lying on your life insurance application, you are putting all of the policies benefits on the line. If the insurance company finds out that you applied as a non smoker and upon death they find out you lied and were actually a smoker, it may not end well. One of two things are likely to happen. First, the death benefits could be completely denied, depending on how much evidence the insurance company had against the person. Or the death benefits could be lessened by a fee that the insurance company takes out of the benefits to cover the costs of a smokers premium.

In either case, it will never be better to lie about something to your insurance company. You should always be honest to be sure that your life insurance policy would have no questions if it ever needed to be paid out. Your life insurance is there to protect you and your family, and when you try to cut corners it could end up leaving your family with nothing.

It’s a big risk that should never be taken. Be upfront and honest with your insurance company to make sure your policy is safe. Lying on your policy almost always leaves you in a position of worry and guilt. Do the insurance company and yourself a favor, be clear and honest when applying for your life insurance, so there is no uncertainty on whether the policy will be paid out.
