There are many things looked at in your medical exam for life insurance, that is assuming you have to take one. With a group life insurance policy, it is usually not required for you to take a medical exam, but with an individual policy it is. If you do have to take a medical exam, it is important to know what they will be looking for during the exam. You will be classified on your height, weight, age, drug addictions or drug use, blood pressure, and any other medically relevant factors. So even if you are not in perfect health according to their standards, you can still obtain life insurance depending on how the outcome of the exam.
Life insurance companies will not give you a life insurance policy if you run too high of a risk to the company. You could be denied if you were considered a high risk to them, but you can obtain coverage if health is improved, or if you decide on a policy with limitations. If you got a life insurance policy, but are still not in good health, there are things you can do to receive a more affordable policy. Say you were 40 years old, 60 pounds overweight, have high blood pressure, and are a smoker, you might be denied coverage or offered a higher premium with limitations. However, in a couple years you lose weight, obtain normal blood pressure, and quit smoking, then you would probably be able to obtain more affordable coverage with fewer limitations.
Another thing that they do during a medical exam, is ask you about your medical history, and in some cases the medical history of your family. They want to know about your history, so they know if you are going to have any serious problems in the future. If there is a fatal medical problem that runs in the family, that would cause you to be a higher risk. Something that the insurance company might do, is offer you a policy that limits coverage in the event of that medical problem, so you are still able to have a standard priced premium. If you did want full coverage, you would probably be offered a higher premium, because of the risk factors involved.
The better health you are in, the more affordable your premium will be, and they longer life you will have. A medical exam is important to obtain life insurance coverage, because it is what most of the cost of insurance is based on. There is always an option to take another medical exam once you already have coverage, to see if you are able to get better priced policy.
