Whatever your stance on same sex marriage is, there is still the issue if a same sex couple will be allowed to share insurance benefits. The main issue is who decides whether if same sex married couples are allowed to share insurance like a regular couple. Generally, the insurance companies should have the say in whether they will let same sex couples share insurance, but if they are denied, is it considered discrimination? Could it result in a lawsuit if a same sex couple is denied insurance together?
It makes it even more difficult when there is not set law for the country. Some states allow same sex marriage, and others do not. The main shared insurance is health insurance, and some companies offer domestic partner benefits, and others do not. It does not mean that the people have to be a same sex couple, it can also mean that it is a couple just not married. The big question is if the insurance companies will allow it for everyone. As of now, not all the insurance companies offer it, but others do.
The same sex couples are gradually being allowed more public freedoms for things like marriage and shared insurance, but for it or against it there are many advances. There is no sure answer to whether same sex couples will be treated like regular couples, but they have definitely come a long way in the past decade.
