Whenever you talk about the future of transportation you almost always think about the flying car. Well there have been some advances in the flying car that could bring it to a whole new level. However, we are probably still very far away from seeing the average “Joe” flying to work every day. Having a flying car poses many difficult questions that have to be handled before you hit the skies. Besides getting insurance for something that fly’s, there is the question of how people will learn to fly safely if everyone is in the air at the same time.
With cars, there is only worrying about staying on the road without hitting anyone else. Could you imagine having everyone flying around at the same time? When flying in the air, there is no road to follow, you have full control all while avoiding collisions with other aircraft’s. Then there is the problem with training, weather conditions, and clearances. It takes someone around 60 hours of training in the air to obtain their private pilot’s license, so how would you be able to get everyone trained to fly a car?
There isn’t any minor fender benders in the sky, if you got into an accident in the air with another aircraft, it will almost always end up with fatalities. So insurance for a flying car will pose a serious problem for insurance companies. Even if everyone was able to fly around their cars, who knows how much it would cost to insure them. Though technology is getting better, and prototypes of a flying car are actually working, getting the average person in the air with their car will be a major challenge, and only the future holds the answers.
