If you find yourself at the scene of an accident and have no idea what to do, the most important thing is to stay calm and don’t do anything you’ll regret later. Sometimes people attempt to do a hit and run or give the other driver false insurance information, which will end up being more trouble later on. They actually think they can get away with it, but smart drivers will document everything possible if involved in an accident. It is important for you to not only get the information off their insurance card, but you should also write down any details about the other victim and their car, especially their license plate number.

If you give someone false information at the scene of an accident, you are just putting yourself in a position to get in even more trouble with the law. What will probably happen is the other person will try to run the claim with your false insurance information, and their insurance company will tell them that the information was false. At that point the person that received your false information will call the police and give them your license plate number. The police will find you, and you will be charged as a criminal to the full extent of the law.

It is never worth trying to get out of an accident, because it will always catch up to you usually with worse consequences. Be a smart driver and know that accidents always happen, but it’s up to you to have proper insurance so you have protection for those types of situations. When you get caught giving falsified insurance information to another driver, you will probably have to go to court resulting in some hefty fines. You also jeopardize trustworthiness with all your future auto insurance providers, because who will want to insure someone with that type of record.

Just remember if your involved in an accident don’t panic and do something illegal like driving away or giving someone fake information. Just make sure you are properly insured, and you will be fine in the event of an accident. That is the purpose of insurance, to receive protection if something goes wrong on the road. So don’t act without thinking, and if you are in an accident just give them your information and write down anything you can, in case someone else tries to give you false information.
