Rarely do people consider attaining health insurance when visiting another country. However, accidents occur anywhere at any time, so how does one go about getting temporary coverage while visiting another country? Visitor’s health insurance will typically cover any unforeseen medical expenses, such as surgery, prescriptions, and extended hospital visits. For those that travel out of the country regularly, visitor’s health insurance is a must. However, for those that visit outside the country periodically, it makes sense to purchase it only when needed because these costs can get rather hefty. Determine whether or not the upcoming trip warrants insurance, or if it merely seems like a luxury.

Before purchasing visitor’s or travelers insurance, the individual needs to determine which type of existing insurance policies he or she belongs to: home, life, health, or auto insurance. Now, perhaps one or two policies may have coverage for traveling outside of the country. If so, one does not need to cover their health insurance a second time if it is already covered. For those areas that are not covered, it is time to contact the international travel policies, and then contact a reputable travel agent. For those moments when the traveler is not prepared and did not set-up insurance before leaving, he or she simply should contact the travel agent from their country and arrange it right away.

Attaining travel insurance can be a very daunting experience because there are so many options, and many companies try to sell unneeded insurance. Basic traveler’s insurance covers minor losses, few medical expenses, but it will not cover the greater expenditures. A few tips: make sure to have health coverage that covers a high amount, in case of a medical emergency. Medical treatment can become quite pricey without proper coverage. Make sure repatriation is covered, which states that unless it’s a severe emergency, the individual will be taken back to his or her country for treatment. The traveler needs to make sure that any money carried is covered under the policy, and these rules often change when going into another country. So it’s wise to check if the policy provides coverage in more than one visited country.
