If currently have, or plan to have a business run from your home, there are some legal and insurance issues that need to be made before you can start making money. First off, your home and business sections of the house will be insured in two different ways. A lot of times you can get coverage for your business through the same provider as your home insurance, but they will be under separate premiums. It will also depend on what type of business you have, because some types of business may not need actual insurance.

Say that you run a “Mom and Pops” sit down restaurant in the whole first floor of your home, you will defiantly want insurance because it is a business where people are constantly coming and going. If someone were to become injured because of a broken front step, you will need some type of liability insurance in case of medical bills or even a lawsuit. On the other hand, say you are a web designer that only deals with customers through the internet, and no one is actually coming to the home. Then you probably would not need insurance for that type of business. The only problem then might be if you had a problem with your businesses equipment and had no insurance, but it still might not be worth having insurance in the end.

The only time where business insurance is highly recommended, is when you own a business in which people are coming and going from your home frequently. Business insurance basically works the same as any other type of insurance, but it just covers a different area. In your business insurance it will protect mainly against liability issues, such as someone becoming injured on your property. It can also protect your personal business equipment if you choose.

Just make sure that if you are planning to start a business from your home, you are properly insured to do so. The last thing you want is to have an insurance issue arise then find out that you are not covered. Business insurance is available in many different ways, and one of the most popular ways is to have your business insured with the same company as your homeowners insurance. Ask your current homeowners insurance provider if they offer business insurance, then you may want to get a few quotes to be sure you are not paying too much.
