Losing your car registration or insurance cards can put you in a very stressful situation. Fortunately, both your registration and insurance cards can be replaced after appropriate actions have been taken. It is a little easier on you to replace an insurance card, rather than your registration, because your insurance card is dealt with straight through the insurance company. In either case, losing or having your information stolen is never good, mainly because you never know who can see your personal information on your registration and insurance cards.

First off, if your insurance card and registration was stolen you should call your local law enforcement and file a police report immediately. Make sure to include the date, time, and location in the report, in case someone tries to use them with any other stolen documents from you. This is important, because if the police ever come across it, they can take appropriate actions to the person who stole it, and return your information safely.

It is highly recommended that you make copies of both your insurance card along with your registration before you put it in your vehicle so if either are lost or stolen, you will still be able to recover your information quickly. If you already have copies of what you need to replace, then you will know exactly what will need replaced if something was missing. That way if something was lost or stolen, you could call your insurance agent up and let them know what happened to obtain your legal documents faster.

When replacing an insurance card, the process can actually be quite simple depending on the company. Basically you would have to call your insurance company and ask them what the procedures are to recovering your lost information. From there, they can give you specific information to recovering your valuable information. They may give you some type of temporary insurance card, so that you can drive your vehicle legally until you get a new replacement.

If your registration was stolen, the process is a little different. You would first have to contact your states department of motor vehicles and inform them of what happened. After that, they would be able to send you a replacement for your original. If the registration stolen was a sticker on the license plate itself, then you would need to find out how long a replacement would take in that specific situation. You would also want to find out if there is some type of temporary tag or registration you could use in the mean time, to stay out of trouble with law enforcement.
